A look back at 2024 and a look ahead to my (photo travel) plans for 2025
A look back at 2024
As the new year unfolds, it's the perfect moment to reflect on the past and anticipate the exciting possibilities in photography that lie ahead.
But first: what did I accomplish in the field of photography in 2024? I certainly kept busy. I embarked on three stunning trips already planned in 2023: to the Lofoten, to Tenerife, and to the highlands of Iceland, marking (for now) my last planned group photo excursions. On two occasions, I photographed the mesmerizing northern lights in our very own Netherlands, and the picture I captured in May was even showcased on the NOS eight o'clock news.
For me, my best photo of 2024, and that just 15 minutes from home. So you certainly don't always have to travel for the ultimate shot!
In addition, I attended portrait photography workshops to delve into a genre distinct from landscape photography for a change (see here the result), and I was eager to learn about proper flash usage, so I enrolled in a full-day course in Zeist. I also took part in two styled shoots, which introduced me to a new realm that I never knew existed and realized wasn't for me.
For my photography business, I had the privilege of completing my first assignment and by being asked to capture a funeral. It was an honor to be trusted with something so intimate and personal. I delivered beautiful images, as this is always my top priority. I grabbed the opportunity to photograph my first wedding, although I can't share the stunning images online. Respecting each person's choice regarding sharing, the experience remains valuable.
Plans for 2025
Here we are at the threshold of a fresh new year.
When deciding on photo locations and subjects, my bucket list seems endless. It's challenging to choose, but currently, a lot depends on when I can travel, as I prefer to be home with family during certain months. Early in 2024, I began planning for 2025 and immediately focused on a photo location that had captured my interest long ago. And that was...
Hungary
Specifically, I'm referring to Bence Máté's photo hides. These hides yield extraordinary opportunities to capture wildlife in their natural habitat (birds, roe deer, and occasionally otters), utilizing a brilliant lighting system that enables photography under any condition, even during twilight and nighttime. These photo hides are considered top-tier, ranking among the finest in the world. I reached out to Jody Zweserijn, whose insightful blogs about these photo hides on her website (which I highly recommend) piqued my interest a few years back. With immense gratitude for all the guidance and assistance Jody provided, I am thrilled that I’ll finally be heading to Hungary in the winter of 2025 after an extended wait. My excitement is amplified by the fact that I’ll be traveling with a talented photographer friend, and together, we eagerly anticipate the incredible experiences that await us.
And then: Romania
While planning our family's 2024 vacation to Romania, I discovered the fascinating work of Romanian photographer Vlad Dumitrescu. His artistry reminds me of the old Dutch masters in his use of light, as showcased in the photos below. From my perspective, his work is unparalleled. His affection for the Romanian countryside and its people shines through, capturing them with profound respect and passion before modernization alters this traditional way of life. We met Vlad last summer in his hometown of Brasov, and during Orthodox Easter, a significant religious event in Romania, I plan to journey with him through the Brasov and Maramures regions. It's sure to be unforgettable, offering a novel photographic experience.
Last but not least: sailing through the Scoresby Sound in Greenland
My trip to Ilulissat in West Greenland left me extremely impressed. Sailing through Disko Bay among the enormous icebergs of the Jacobshavn Glacier was unforgettable. The sounds of the humpback whales, added to the feeling of being on the edge of the world, it’s an adventure I would repeat without hesitation. Another breathtaking destination in Greenland is the Scoresby Sound fjord system on the east coast. Icelandic shipping company North Sailing runs expeditions to Scoresby Sound during the two summer months that are suitable for navigation, using wooden schooners. After my 2022 trip to Greenland, I contacted North Sailing to explore expedition possibilities. Though other travel opportunities arose, when North Sailing informed me last November of an opening on the wooden schooner Hildur in 2025 that fit perfectly with my schedule, I could no longer contain my enthusiasm. Consequently, I've planned for a quieter year for photo trips in 2026. ;)
Overall, I feel fortunate and can anticipate a year filled with an exceptionally wide range of photo opportunities!
