A dive into portrait photography

In 2024, I embarked on a journey into portrait photography.

I engaged in two portrait photography workshops at Kaat Stieber's studio in Rotterdam. I arranged the first workshop through Heel Holland Fotografeert. Afterward, I participated in the Masterclass Portrait Photography offered directly by Kaat.

The first image presented here is a studio-lit portrait, while the accompanying photo was captured in natural daylight. More images are on the way, as I plan to take my time to edit them in a specific style.

At Ymke Myrte's (YM Academy) studio in Nootdorp, I engaged in the intensive Fine Art Painting Portraits workshop. Ymke utilizes a sophisticated lighting setup with various studio lamps.

On the whole, engaging in portrait photography is immensely fun and is definitely a skill to develop. The downside includes needing to invest in extra studio gear such as flashes, backdrops, and organizing a styled model. This setup can hinder the thrill of impromptu shoots, which I personally enjoy.

I highly recommend the workshops with Kaat and Ymke; I gained a wealth of knowledge from these talented photographers and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It is also very nice to see how things work in a totally different branch of photography and I believe you can always benefit from it.
